I’ve started maintaining a humane fruit fly trap. I actually release them into the wild - right outside our door - for them to possibly sneak back in.
get a small bowl
find some discarded ripe fruit (without skin)
stretch some plastic wrap
poke small holes in the top
free fruit flies and change out fruit every 6 hours. (the fruit has to change out because that is their breeding ground. keep the fruit, keep the eggs).
I read about people who keep their oven open overnight and leave ripe fruit in there. In the morning they close the oven and turn it to 200. Not as fruit fly friendly as the above method.
