At H’s parents last night for Christmas I found an old Life Magazine (July, 1954). As I read through it I noticed an article about the release of a study linking cigaret (the spelling back then) smoking to a shorter life expectancy. About 20 minutes later I noticed the back cover as the famous “It’s Toasted” Lucky Strikes ad from Mad Men and remembered the specific scene in the same context. Tobacco company a little panicked about the “smoking kills you” report.
Also an ad from Bell Telephone Systems praising themselves with building the infrastructure to transmit the new, yet to be really seen, color tv.
There was also a Sports Illustrated from 1984 where Pete Rose had just moved to the Expos. It had a great shot of him working out with a huge gorilla poster in the background. Also, Warren Moon was featured who had just signed with the Oilers for a 5 year $6 million deal (80% of which was a signing bonus). He had a cookie shop in Edmonton called something like Warren Moon’s Cookies. I can’t find good evidence of it in a quick google search, but there was a good shot of him with a cookie pan.
